What You Should Know About Portugal
Food plays a significant role in Portuguese culture, and most food can be purchased fresh every day at market stalls in the area.
Portuguese meals often last for an extended period and feature numerous heated talks. Watch for individuals who are pinching their earlobes throughout supper; this suggests that they are enjoying their food. You could also notice that Portuguese promptness is a little fewer formal than you’re used to.
You can probably learn Portuguese if you can speak a little Spanish. Regardless of the fact that they sound very different whenever written, they are actually remarkably comparable.

AFS is one of the leaders for global high school exchange, which has been in operation for 75 years and having a 100-year history. Our network of approximately 3,000 volunteers across America is one feature that makes us special.
Many of our employees have either studied abroad with AFS or hosted foreign exchange students. These neighborhood volunteers assist host clients, pupils, and educational establishments in making the most of their hosting experience.
We pick pupils that are motivated and smart.
Through a rigorous application process, we carefully choose the students who will take part in our programs.
Our students are driven, passionate, and ready to introduce their host communities to their native cultures. They want to know what American principles we uphold.
Additionally, a small percentage of our students are awarded full merit-based scholarships by the U.S. Department of State. Students participate in a highly difficult selection procedure in their home countries in order to go to the United States on these scholarships and join a host family, school, and community.

Regional Coordinators
Your main point of contact for the duration of your student’s stay will be an AFS Local Coordinator (Liaison). They’ll check in with you, respond to your inquiries, and assist with any problems you may have. You’re in excellent hands because many of our organizers have experience as hosts.

Portugal’s High School for You
You will have a one-of-a-kind chance to study the language and introduce your culture to your peers if you attend high school in Portugal.
Depending on your interests and prior schoolwork, you’ll be enrolled in a public high school alongside peers your age and on one of the following tracks: science and technology, social-economic sciences, interpersonal and human sciences, languages and information available, or visual arts.
